I’m Carlos Amador, currently pursuing a BA in Music with the Open College of Arts. I have a profound passion for film music and its ability to evoke powerful emotions in audiences. Over the past three years, I have conducted extensive research into systematic approaches rooted in evolutionary, associative, and psychological principles to evoke different emotions through music in the Hollywood style. Many of these techniques are demonstrated in my music compositions for original Horror story Eyes of Love and open-source Fantasy film Sintel.

Now, I’m publishing all this knowledge in my upcoming book Designing Music for Emotion, due for release in December 2024. This book illustrates many of these methods with over 70 musical examples and demonstrates the effectiveness of these techniques through a lage-scale survey. The book will offer aspiring composers practical tools to design emotionally compelling music while preserving their unique artistic voice.

I will promote the book through an online book presentation event that will take place on the 11th of December 2024. This event will feature a presentation on my research, performances of the original pieces Eyes of Love and Sintel and a roundtable discussion on the topic of music and emotion with music psychologists and film composers. This will be a great opportunity to understand why and how music moves us. It’s exciting to have the participation of prominent film composers, educators and music psychologist scholars. I’m currently finalising some of the marketing tools I will use for this event.

The implementation of this project has been a journey filled with ups and downs. I began by establishing an online presence through the creation of a personal website, a blog, as well as Facebook and YouTube channels. Building an online presence is a time-consuming process, which makes initial projects the most challenging to execute.

Once I had a clear vision for the project, I had to seek funding and identify an orchestra to perform the music. I applied for academic funding through OCA University, which was successful, and also ran a crowdfunding campaign, which, unfortunately, was unsuccessful. I promoted the crowdfunding campaign through Google and Facebook ads, Facebook forums, and local music organizations.Three key lessons I learned from the crowdfunding campaign are:
Crowdfunding campaigns require a significant amount of effort to set up and promote.
They are likely to fail without a well-planned, extended pre-campaign period.
It is important to aim for conservative funding goals.
Additionally, securing an amateur or professional orchestra proved very challenging, as their schedules are often set a year in advance. As a result, the event is now being conducted online, using orchestral mock-ups of the compositions
The best part of this project has been collaborating with different artists. These included:
Sandhya Karamat Barlaas, writer of the Horror story Eyes of Love,
Sam Oakley, narrator of Eyes of Love,
Sara Bigley, professional book editor,
David Pérez Carabias, book cover design
Qha Qha, hand-written music extracts for book cover,
Richard Vreeland and Jay Chattaway, Hollywood film composers, who inputted on music emotional approaches
Roundtable participants.
I feel incredibly honoured that Emmy Award-winning Hollywood composer Jay Chattaway graciously agreed to write the foreword for my book.
